McKinney-Vento Homeless Education
Ensuring Every Student Has Access to Education—No Matter Their Circumstances
At Idaho Falls School District 91, we believe that every child deserves stability, support, and the opportunity to succeed in school—no matter their housing situation. The Title IX-A Education for Homeless Children and Youth section of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) ensures that students who lack a fixed and regular nighttime residence are provided a free, public education.
Who Qualifies for McKinney-Vento Services?
A student is considered homeless under McKinney-Vento if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including:
Living in shelters, motels, cars, parks, or public spaces
Staying temporarily with friends or relatives due to loss of housing (doubling up)
Living in campgrounds, abandoned buildings, or other unstable conditions
Youth who are unaccompanied (not living with a parent or guardian)
Your Educational Rights Under McKinney-Vento
If your child qualifies under McKinney-Vento, they have the right to:
Immediate enrollment in school, even if lacking proof of residency, school records, or other required documents
1Continue attending their school of origin (if feasible and requested) or enroll in a new school where they are currently staying
2Receive free school transportation to their school of origin (if requested)
3Access the same educational opportunities as housed students, including tutoring, special programs, and extracurricular activities
4Attend school alongside housed students—segregation based on housing status is prohibited
5Have their rights posted in schools and other key locations across the community
6If you believe your child may qualify, contact our Homeless Liaison for support. We can assist with school placement, transportation, and additional resources to support your child's success.
